The 2009 Canadian Junior Track & Field Championships got underway in Charlottetwon, PEI, on Friday. This is one of the largest Junior Championships held in many years with close to 600 athletes competing, including over 100 Atlantic Canadians.
Atlantic performances on the first day of action were highlighted by a gold medal from Saint John's Caleb Jones, who threw 65.10m to capture the men's title. Other notable performances included several Atlantic athletes advancing to semi-finals and finals. Showing depth in the javelin event, three Atlantic athletes made it on to the women's javelin final - Alexandra Black of NB, Lindsay Gauvin of NB, and Chelsea Whalen of NS.
